Ion TIȚA-NICOLESCU: Traditional art and religious ethnology, essential elements of Romanian identity

Abstract:

The Romanian village has always used personification as a means of knowledge and communication with the divinity. The decorative elements on the wood gates, roofs, pillars or porches had above all a strong apotropaic role in which evil spirits were forbidden to enter and manifest themselves in the life of the family. The daily life of the simple man was governed by functionality and faith, in the sense that he, the Romanian peasant, considered himself to live in a liturgical space, constituted not only by the church, but by the entire village. For this reason, there is an entire theology, of Christian-folkloric origin, in the way houses are built, folk costumes are made, and rituals are established. All of this represents a unique way of thinking in which local “ordinance” was not only a key component of community identity, but also one that pertains to our identity as a nation in an increasingly globalized world.
